Kenyan President William Ruto has faced protests since June 2024 over the Finance Bill 2024 and allegations of corruption. Reinforced by the latest “Gen Z” June 26 anniversary protests, there have been more calls for his resignation among the Kenyan young population.
On June 27, 2025, Hon. Dan Borno (@DanBornoReal) shared a post on X claiming Ruto has resigned. The claimant cited a letter dated June 27, 2025, addressed as “Office of the President, Republic of Kenya, Harambee House.”
By June 28, 2025, it had been viewed over 77,000 times, reposted more than 500 times, and garnered 198 comments.
Recall that a similar letter in 2024 claimed that Deputy President Gachagua had resigned, but AfricaCheck debunked it.
Other X users, Jack the builder (Jack_ng01), Mr Junior Ebong (@optimus_dracula), Odogwu Akpos Makanjuola (@ajdc), a news blog Info Room (@InfoRØOM) and a Ugandan journalist, Eddies K Edward (@EddiesKEdward1), shared the letter, further spreading the unverified information.
In a separate post, the online Turkish news blog Class Report TR (@clashreporttr) shared the letter, claiming that Kenyan protesters had prepared it for President Ruto.
DUBAWA chose to fact-check this claim given the post’s virality and impact on public trust and stability.
Verification
To ascertain the authenticity of this document, we conducted a thorough investigation using multiple investigative tools and methods.
A Google reverse search traced the document to multiple X accounts, with some claiming it was drafted by Kenyan protesters and others sharing the same resignation claim here, here, here, and here. The posts consistently appeared between June 27 and June 29, 2025. However, circulation on social media does not confirm authenticity.
We analysed the alleged letter using Forensica, and this revealed critical gaps. One, the document lacks metadata, C2PA Content Credentials, and geotags. This means there is no verifiable information about its origin, the tools used to create it, or whether it has been edited, which raises significant doubts about its authenticity.
So we subjected the image to the Fake Image detector verification tool, which identified it as computer-generated or modified.
DUBAWA also conducted a cross-reference search on the President’s official website and his official X account, William Samoei Ruto, PhD (@WilliamsRuto). We found no evidence of his resignation as of June 28, 2025. However, we discovered that Ruto signed the controversial Finance Bill into law the day before he allegedly submitted his resignation.
We compared the document to samples of official correspondence from President William Ruto. Authentic presidential documents typically feature a distinct Kenyan coat of arms, the word “Harambee,” a bold correspondence title, the date, the designation “State House Nairobi,” the president’s signature, and sometimes an official seal, as seen in some of his cabinet briefings.
The document in question lacks all these elements, further undermining its credibility.
We also found that major Kenyan media outlets, such as Nation Africa, CitizenTV Kenya, NTV Kenya, Standard Digital Media, and international news organisations like BBC News and CNN have not reported Ruto’s resignation. We found this odd because significant political developments, such as a presidential resignation, would typically dominate headlines worldwide, as seen in past events like the Finance Bill protests.
Africa Check debunked similar false claims about Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi in March 2025. This confirms a pattern of forged documents targeting Kenyan officials.
Despite the recent #RutoMustGo trend on social media, fueled by protests and their aftermath, President William Ruto addressed resignation calls, stating they can only occur through constitutional impeachment processes.
So far, there is no credible evidence linking Ruto to the circulating resignation letter.
Conclusion
The claim that Kenyan President William Ruto has resigned is false. No official sources confirm his resignation as of June 28, 2025. Our findings reveal that the viral letter was fabricated.
