Burkina Faso Detains Four Officers after Failed Coup

Burkina Faso said on Thursday, September 28, 2023 stated that four officers has been detained, a day after the military government announced it had a thwarted coup attempt.

The four suspected officer are said to be involved in “conspiracy against state security”, military prosecutor Ahmed Ferdinand Sountoura said in a statement seen by AFP on Thursday while two others are on the run.

Furthermore, the junta said late on Wednesday, September 27th the intelligence and security services had foiled a coup attempt seeking to shed all possible light on the plot.

It comes nearly a year to the day since junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in the West African nation on September 30th, 2022.

Meanwhile, his takeover was the country’s second coup in eight months, both triggered in part by discontent at failures to stem a raging jihadist insurgency, which swept in from neighboring Mali in 2015.
