Osun Youth Leaders Meet at AGM, Declare Neutrality Ahead of Governorship Election

Youth leaders across Osun State, operating under the umbrella of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Osun State Chapter, on Friday converged in Osogbo for the Council’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where key issues affecting youth development, governance, and political participation were extensively discussed. The meeting also served as a platform to review activities of the council over the past year and set a clear direction for future engagements.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of NYCN Osun State, Comrade Akinbode Olakolupo Oluwasegun, expressed profound gratitude to God Almighty for His guidance, protection, and wisdom in steering the affairs of the youth in Osun State and the council at large.

He commended the Executive Governor of Osun State for policies and programmes that promote youth inclusion in governance and development, noting that deliberate efforts of the administration have continued to create opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the state. He also appreciated the Honourable Commissioner for Youth Affairs, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, and other relevant agencies for their openness and collaboration in implementing youth-centred initiatives.

The NYCN Chairman acknowledged the Osun State House of Assembly for its legislative responsibilities and its role in shaping policies that directly impact young people, commending lawmakers who have consistently shown interest in youth-related matters and policy development.

Comrade Akinbode further extended appreciation to royal fathers, royal patrons, patrons, community leaders, development partners, security agencies, the media, and all stakeholders whose support has continued to strengthen youth programmes and advocacy across Osun State.

Describing the AGM as more than a statutory gathering, the NYCN Chairman said the meeting provided an avenue for accountability, reflection, unity, and strategic planning for the future of youth development in the state.

He highlighted notable achievements recorded by the council within less than one year, including the strengthening of institutional structures through the inauguration of functional directorates aimed at promoting efficiency, professionalism, and inclusion. He also referenced a series of town hall engagements held across the state to amplify the voices of youths from different communities, associations, and sectors.

According to him, the council successfully organised an impactful International Youth Day celebration that focused on leadership, innovation, and civic responsibility. It also conducted a cultural heritage tour to reconnect young people with their identity, history, and values, alongside the delivery of citizenship and leadership training, described as the first of its kind in the history of the NYCN in Osun State.

In the area of economic and digital development, Comrade Akinbode said the council prioritised youth empowerment through business support initiatives and technology-driven programmes, including the successful hosting of a technology conference that prepared Osun youths for opportunities in the global digital economy.

He added that the council deepened institutional respect and collaboration through the appointment and decoration of Royal Patrons and Patrons, strengthening partnerships between traditional institutions and youth leadership for sustainable development.

The NYCN Chairman paid special tribute to the Heads of Voluntary Youth Organizations (VYOs) across Osun State, describing their unity, cooperation, and leadership as a major pillar of the progress recorded by the council.

Addressing the political climate in the state, Comrade Akinbode stated clearly that the NYCN Osun State Chapter has not endorsed any governorship candidate or political party ahead of the forthcoming election. He stressed that the council remains non-partisan and issue-driven, while remaining firm and unapologetic about the interests of Osun youths.

He noted that Osun youths are organised, conscious, and ready to mobilise in support of any candidate or administration that demonstrates genuine commitment to youth empowerment, sustainable job creation, skills development, and active youth inclusion in governance and policy implementation. He also reiterated the call for youth representation at the executive level, particularly the appointment of a Commissioner below the age of 45, in line with emerging best practices in other states.

Comrade Akinbode called on youths across Osun State to remain united, disciplined, and politically conscious, urging them to resist division and manipulation while continuing to engage constructively with leaders and institutions.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter, to continue serving as a credible, responsible, and fearless voice for young people in the state.

The Annual General Meeting concluded with a call for fruitful deliberations, sustained unity, and renewed commitment to advancing the collective aspirations and welfare of youths in Osun State.

Signed:
Comrade Akinbode Olakolupo Oluwasegun
