JUST IN: Over 100 Students Hospitalised As Suspected Gas Leak Rocks Ogun Schools

Panic broke out in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Friday after a suspected gas leak affected more than 100 students and teachers across several schools, marking a recurrence of a similar incident recorded in the area months earlier.

The affected schools include Anglican Girls’ Grammar School, Obalende, Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage, and other nearby public schools.

The victims were rushed to the Ogun State General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, as well as private medical facilities after reporting symptoms such as stomach pain, dizziness, weakness, and sudden fainting.

A viral video from the scene showed students fleeing classrooms in panic while teachers attempted to assist those who collapsed.

An eyewitness described the situation as more severe than the earlier incident in the community, noting that hospitals were already overwhelmed by the influx of patients.

“I am at the Ogun State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, and what we are seeing now is worse than the last incident,” the source said.

Confirming the development, the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said emergency response teams had been deployed to investigate the cause of the suspected gas emission.

He disclosed that air quality monitoring devices in the area recorded elevated methane levels, with readings reaching about 13,500 parts per million.

According to him, a multi-agency team involving environmental experts, emergency responders, and health officials is currently working to trace the source of the leak and assess possible risks to residents.

He advised residents to avoid open flames and immediately report symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or breathing difficulties to nearby health facilities.

The government assured the public that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
